Before Your First Visit

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to what people ask us most about first visits, insurance and cost, testing, and how we work with your other doctors.

I.

Getting Started

What happens at the first visit?

Your first visit is 90 minutes with a physician. We go through your history, symptoms, prior records, and goals, and we decide together which tests are worth running.

Do I need to have symptoms to become a patient?

No. Many of our patients feel well and come to us for screening and a long-range prevention plan.

What types of conditions do you treat?

We see patients for hormonal health, metabolic health, cardiovascular prevention, autoimmune conditions, cognitive concerns, and long-term prevention. Many come to us after feeling unheard in conventional care.

Whether you are in perimenopause, have PCOS, fatigue, insulin resistance, or brain fog, we look for the underlying cause and build a plan around it.

What is the difference between functional, integrative, and longevity medicine?

Functional medicine looks for the underlying causes of symptoms across the body's systems. Integrative medicine combines conventional treatment with evidence-based nutrition, lifestyle, and mind-body care. Longevity medicine works to lower the risk of the conditions that shorten life and limit independence: heart disease, cancer, dementia, and metabolic disease.

At Nova, the same physicians practice all three.

Do you offer virtual visits?

Yes. We offer in-person and virtual consultations, depending on where you live and what you prefer. Some services, such as lab testing or imaging, still require an in-person visit or coordination with a local facility.

Do you accept patients from outside New Jersey?

At this time we can only accept patients who live in New Jersey. We are working on licensure in New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.

II.

Insurance and Cost

Do you accept insurance?

We are out of network with all commercial insurance plans, and we do not participate in Medicare or Medicaid. Payment is due at the time of service. Many of our services and lab tests may be eligible for reimbursement through an HSA or FSA, so check with your benefits provider.

Can I use my HSA or FSA?

We require payment at the time of service and do not bill insurance. Many of our services and lab tests may be eligible for reimbursement through a Health Savings Account or Flexible Spending Account. Check with your benefits provider to confirm what your plan covers.

What does it cost?

Fees depend on the testing and care your situation calls for. We go through the costs with you on the introductory call, before you book a first visit.

Care at Nova

What kinds of testing do you offer?

We offer advanced testing that includes comprehensive blood panels, hormone and metabolic testing, genetic analysis, gut and microbiome assessments, cardiovascular screening, environmental toxin and mold testing, and micronutrient evaluation. A physician chooses tests based on your history and goals.

Do you prescribe medications?

Yes, when appropriate, including for hormone therapy, metabolic health, and thyroid care. We do not take over chronic medication management or routine refills, which belong with your primary care provider. Your plan may combine prescriptions, supplements, and lifestyle changes.

Will Nova replace my primary care physician?

No. We work alongside your primary care physician, who should continue to handle routine screenings, vaccinations, urgent needs, and routine prescription refills. We share results with your other doctors at your request.

From Our Physicians

Request a Consultation

We started Nova because the appointments we were trained to give were too short for the questions our patients were asking. That is why a first visit here is 90 minutes, and why the two of us work from the same plan. We both see patients in Roseland, and we would be glad to meet you.
